God blessed the work and the Convention grew. With growth and changing demographics its name changed several times. Between 1889 and 1947 the several African-American Missionary Baptist conventions made attempts to merge. The first major attempt began in 1889 when a group of young men from the various Baptist conventions began to express a desire to bring the organizations together.
